As if seeing your kids get older, isn't enough to make you feel old, I actually saw one of my children get married on Friday. My son married his Dutch girlfriend Amber at the age of 23 years old and I became the hated mother-in-law. They hadn't organised cars, but luckily a friend managed to get us a Jag and we popped some ribbon on it to make it special for Kim and Tilly. I have some amazing friends
When the vicar announced them as Mr. and Mrs. H-N, I felt saddened as I had put that surname together after my divorce from Zach's dad. It was a combination of my married name and my maiden name. I never thought about the fact that one day I would have to share it with another woman. Suddenly I was no longer the important Mrs. H-N in my son's life.
The wedding went well, The bride looked radiant as she seemed to float down the aisle with her father. and I may be biased but two of the bridesmaids looked gorgeous. Kim swept down the aisle in her beautiful Mint Green Lace Bodice Maxi Dress from JD Williams, It was from their maxi dress selection. But as the wedding was casual, this was perfect for the girl that NEVER wears dresses. Tilly just had the cuteness factor as she came down the aisle in her Monsoon dress. I cannot afford Monsoon as everyday clothing for her, but she loves going into the shop at St Pancras and she fell in love with this dress.
I was so proud of them both for playing such a big part in their brothers big day.
I had to sit next to my ex-husband on the big day at the reception. There is no love lost there, but I was on my best behaviour. I think the copious amounts of wine that I was drinking, actually helped to keep me calm on the day and not say anything to him. There are so many things that I will never forgive him for - but I put on my fake smile and got through the day, that deserved a reward of more wine. My parents were there and I haven't spoken to them for years, again it was my son's wedding and I was determined not to let anything upset the apple cart, so I just carried on drinking more wine!
So we danced and mingled with people, we ate plenty of food and danced to the disco. Did I mention that we drank wine? Loads of wine? Maybe I drank because I was mourning the loss of importance in my son's life. Maybe it was just to cope with the guests that I didn't like, who knows?
The bride threw her bouquet, as it flew into the air I tried to push everyone out of the way to catch it! I am 44 years old and my time is running out, but7-year-old old caught it! We watched as the bride and groom took to the dance floor and I was asked to dance by a guest. I thought 'phew' as he saved me from looking like a loner and Tilly used her loudest voice ever to ask Kim if it was her dad that I was dancing with. Funnily enough, the guest made a quick exit after that! The evening soon came to the end after Tilly and I danced and danced to the music.
It had been a long day and we all went home to bed that was spinning every time we closed our eyes and I had to get up at 4 am to get Kim a bottle of water from the fridge as she was spinning still. But it really was a lovely day and now Zach is back in Rotterdam with his new wife.
