My Experience With Body Shaming

Last week I went for breakfast in my local Wetherspoons, with a friend and we were discussing our upcoming holiday to Turkey. I told her that I had two bikinis and two swimming costumes for the two weeks and wasn't sure if it was enough. As I was talking two ladies on a near table starting laughing at the top of their voice, you know that laugh that is exaggerated and obvious that you are being laughed about? Yes that kind of laugh!

So I didn't know what to think at the time, we were a little shocked to be honest. So I am a size 28, but I have never been ashamed or appalled of my body, because this is who I am and this is who I am happy to be. But this attempt at body shaming was appalling from two grown up women. When are we ever going to change as a society and take people as they are?

As a society, if anyone looks different or does anything different and against the grain, then people don't like it. People today still don't like the way people are and they find time out of their day to take the piss out of them, criticise them or run them down. Is it any wonder that so many people have severe weight problems or even mental health problems due to effectively being bullied and shamed? Personally it didn't upset me because it was plain childish and if anything, they made a fool of themselves with the over exaggerated laughing.

Why should I be ashamed at wanting to wear a swimming costume? I have an ample busom f***ing huge bosom, so why should I hide it away? I also have thick skin, so I can take the piss taking, the stares and the criticism BUT others can not. There are people out there that take it to heart when people take the pis out of them in public. This is body shaming at its worse and it should not be happening in today's society. It is bad enough when skinny models are portrayed in magazines and on the catwalk. Kids these days are growing up with these 'role models' and if parents are acting like this too, then what hope really is there for kids of the future. Ignorance breeds ignorance!

So if last week's incident over breakfast has taught me anything, it has shown me that I have the determination to wear a bikini top on holiday. People always make throw away comments about other people without thinking about the repercussion that it has on them.  People can be devastated when they are the victim of gossip and bullying, it can have a detrimental effect on their mental health and ability to function as a confident person. So the next time you want to take the piss out of the way someone looks or acts, then think about if it was someone doing it to you or your child, sister or mum. Its not nice is it?
