What I've Been Binge Watching

The days of watching normal Tv have gone in our house. I can go months without watching a soap opera and when customers come into the shop and talk about a product that they have seen on the tv, I never know what they are talking about because I always seem to be watching catch up tv or on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.

The thing with Netflix or Amazon Prime is that you can watch the whole series in one go, you don't need to watch an episode a week. They are worth the fee to join these. With Amazon Prime, you can also go into it with a family member, so instead of paying the full £79, you can share the cost and pay only £40 and this is what I do. I am awful for binge-watching programmes and I can put one episode on and then look at the clock again and it's 7 hours later. The worst thing is when you start watching something at 8pm and before you know it, it's 3 am! So what have I been binge-watching?

Reign - This is on Netflix and it is all about the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots who became queen at only a few days old. The programme is based on a lot of fiction as well as the facts and it has modern music integrated into the film that they dance to at parties, I actually liked this touch to the film. The story is all about the young Mary who is innocent and almost naive but goes on to become a strong leader not only of Scotland but also for a while, France. There is a fair bit of sex in the film, but I guess its something they did a lot of in the olden days and it actually made me think a lot about the real story of Mary Queen of Scots and the life long feud she had with her cousin Elizabeth I.

The Marvellous Mrs Maisel - This is a Prime original and it is so funny. Midge Maisel's husband leaves her for the secretary at work - such a cliche! Mrs Maisel is so upset/angry that she goes off to rant about it in her local bar. Unfortunately, it is the 1950's and she has to fight against the ignorance that a woman's place is in the home. She has dreams of being a successful comedian and with the help of the most inexperienced manager ever she does eventually get there. I love this programme because it shows a woman who defies the odds in a time when women were purely homemakers and yet she is successful and independent although it makes me laugh so much when she goes out all the time and seems to 'forget' about her children and assumes other people will look after them.

Outlander - I had been told for a long time to watch this and I never did, so by the time I got my act together, it was into the 4th series. Outlander follows the story of Claire Randall who touches some magical stones in Lallybroch and is transported from 1945 (that the programme is set into) to 1743 and is caught up in the Battle of Colluden. I bloody love this programme because it shows the history of Scotland, that I never would have bothered reading in a history book. Although it is a fictional story that has a few historical references, it made me learn more about Scottish history. I am half Scottish, so it really interested me.  Now I am all caught up to date and I have to wait until every Monday to watch the new episode. This can be watched on Amazon Prime.

The Mentalist - I have watched this a few times over the years and the thing that I like about it is that it's psychological. It is a programme about Patrick Jane who is is a crime consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation. After years of being a fake psychic, he gained a gift for astute observation and reading people. I have only watched series one of this so far, but it's the kind of cat and mouse programme that I enjoy watching. It's on Amazon Prime Video.

Lucifer - The funniest series that I have watched in a long time. Lucifer Morningstar is bored of life that is in Hell and he climbs out to live in LA. All is well and he opens his own nightclub but accidentally ends up being an LAPD consultant after a shootout in his nightclub called LUX. It's funny as you watch him trying to bring people to justice, the honest way and the way he hypnotises the criminals to confess. He falls for the detective that he is working with and you can feel the tension as you watch the film. Before long his Angel brother comes down from Heaven to get him to put back into Hell, but Lucifer is having none of it! This is on Amazon Prime Video.

What have you been watching?
