An Open Letter To A Rude Customer In The Supermarket

Dear Shopper in Iceland

I think you dropped something in the doorway of the shop as you came in. Oh yeah you did, it was your manners!

I was in the queue behind you today and witnessed your behaviour and the way you spoke to the cashier. I really wasn't her fault that your cash note was ripped and she was unsure as to whether to accept it or not.

You see, working in retail is not as easy as you think. She might choose to work there but she doesn't choose to take abuse from customers on a daily basis. She probably gets minimum wage for a job where customers get pissy with her when they don't get their own way. Throwing your arms in the air and saying in your rather rude voice that it didn't matter and then counting your coins out made you look like .......... basically a twat.
Sales assistants are not there for you to be demanding to and for you to speak to like something that you trod in on the ground. Sales assistants work hard for the money that they do earn and it barely covers the cost of living. Then they smile at you and still try to help you out as much as they can, despite really wanting to rip your head off because you probably weren't the first customer that was rude to the cashier today. I actually apologised for your behaviour today.

Then when rude customers don't get their own way, they make a complaint to head office or leave a bad review on the dreaded company social media. The sales assistant then gets into trouble through no fault of their own, but just remember most shops have CCTV and they can see that it was indeed your fault all along.

Sales assistants take so much abuse from customers, and you don't know that sales assistant. You don't know if they are having a tough time, you don't know that they might have just had someone coming in and stealing from them and you don't know that you are the 23rd person to be rude to her on that day. A sales assistant can only take so much before she breaks and she is trying so hard to hold back the tears and counting the minutes until her shift finishes.

Maybe next time you will take care of your money and you won't have to put it on the sales assistant like this and you will remember to bring your manners with you. Working in retail is so hard.

Love from the lady in the queue
