Yes, it is still August, but before we know it, it is going to be back to school. We are lucky that we live in a country where we don’t have to supply the classroom with pens, crayons or books. What we buy our kids are optional extras as back to school gifts. They love little luxury gifts, but as parents, we also know these gifts will help them learn. We have put together some products that will help your child, whilst being fun.
Learn & Colour: French-English School Words
I am a huge believer in writing things down to remember them, so colouring in will have the same effect. The book is A5, so it fits into a school bag easily, if they want to take it to school. I love that the pictures are only printed on one side of the page. So many times, your child colours one page of their colouring book and the ink seeps through to the other page. Now you don’t need to worry about ruining the pages.
The words are basic and easy to learn from the 30 illustrations in the book. The pictures are easy to colour in, and even though this is aimed at younger children, even my teenager read it and asked to colour it in. Although primary school kids do not need to take a school bag to school, it is easier to have one. They can pop their water bottle in there, as well as a raincoat, reading books or a lunch box. Your kids will unlikely need these for school. They are more likely to want them, especially for use at home. Easy access to things like pens, pencils, crayons and chalk will encourage your child to want to write or colour in. Give them some chalk and let them draw on the pathway outside; the rain will wash it away afterwards. Learning how to hold a pen or pencil correctly is crucial. So giving them pencils at home will encourage them to hold pencils correctly and firmly. You do not need to go to expensive shops, especially when places like Lidl and Aldi sell cheap sets like this for a pound or two.

This is a great product for your child in year 1 or 2. The pack contains magnetic words that your child can put together on a fridge or the magnetic board that they have in the pack. It’s a great product for putting words together in a sentence. You get 159 chunky words in the set and the magnetic board, which is also a dry-erase board. So you can write words on there. Then get your child to find the matching magnetic words. You can also encourage your child to use their imagination by picking out 3 words. And ask them to tell a story about those 3 words. You can also turn all of the words upside down, picking a word up and reading that word out. See who can read the most words and win a prize. Back To School Novelty Erasers
Although they might not need these until they get to the upper end of primary school, these were too cute not to add to the list of gifts. We all remember how excited we were to take smelly erasers or shaped erasers to school. These are cute, and the kids can use them to make a story as well as use them for practical purposes. They came from WHSmith for £4 a set. WHSmith has become more affordable over the past few years, and you can get some great little bits in there for kids going back to school.
Mood Bears From Tomy
No matter how old your child is, they will always have feelings. Some children find it difficult to show their feelings. So Mood Bears are a great way for children to show how they feel. They are awesome for nonverbal children to show how they are feeling too. You can pop a couple in the bag of your child who is starting reception class. If a child is feeling sad, they won’t tell you. But if they carry the Mood Bear, who is sad, the staff will know that there might be something wrong. This is one more for the smaller kids. As the child is younger, they will start to recognise the animals. The set has different colour cards for different types of animals. As the child gets older, they will start to recognise the letters and words on the cards. You can play games with the kids. Ask your child how to spell the animal words or describe the animals, and see if they can guess the correct ones. You can also ask your child to draw the animal and write its name on the paper. These cards are also great for children who are learning English as a second language. My granddaughter is Dutch, so English is her second language. These will be great for her; she is 5 years old.
