Best Comfort Foods For When You Are Sick

When you are feeling ill, all you want to do is cuddle up underneath a duvet or blanket and eat snacks. It probably isn’t the best thing that you could be eating BUT it is a comfort thing. A couple of weeks ago I had Covid for the second time. The first time was in March and whilst I was ill, I barely ate anything. This time I was like a human dustbin, and Kim must have known. she came home on the first day of me testing positive and she had a carrier bag full of snacks and comfort foods. Not just sweet food but things for the fridge like Dairy lea snacks and sausage rolls. I have also written a post about how to make your teen feel better and we mentioned comfort foods there
You do not want to cook when you are ill. You just want to be able to grab something that you can heat up quickly. So snack foods really do become your comfort food. Here is a list of my comfort foods for when you are sick.
Soup Is One Of The Best Comfort Foods
All the time you were little, you used to go to bed when you were ill and your mum would bring you a bowl of soup. I also did this when mine were ill. Especially if they had a cold, what’s the old saying? Feed a Cold, Starve a Fever, the meaning of this is to let your body rest when you have a fever but to feed a cold as it warms your body up from the inside. So soup is on my list of the best comfort foods for when you are sick.
If you are a superwoman who makes her own homemade soup all of the time, then you are awesome because you will be making soup packed with good stuff. But if you are a mum like me, then you are just as awesome. Because you managed to work the tin opener for once. Tinned soups work just as well, they might not be as thick and exciting as homemade soup. But they warm you up inside as they should.

Chocolate!
Of course, chocolate is comfort food because of how much we love the taste. But did you know chocolate is also rich in antioxidants called polyphenols, which could help to reduce muscle aches and inflammation? Extremely helpful if you have the flu and your body aches like it has been trampled by 14 elephants.
You always feel better when you have eaten chocolate too. You might get a bit of a sugar rush and have a burst of energy. But for some reason, I always feel happier after eating chocolate.

Fridge Snacks Are Some Of The Best Comfort Foods
As I said earlier, snack foods mean that I do not have to stress about what to cook for dinner. Although Tilly is of an age where she can cook a basic meal in the oven. I wouldn’t expect her to do it all of the time. So having bits in the fridge to snack on whilst I am ill, takes the stress out of preparing a proper meal.
We all love a picnic and a picnic in bed when you are feeling ill seems wrong. But it makes you feel so much better. You can also pick at foods as and when you are peckish, rather than eat them all in one go. I am using my afternoon tea photo as a way to show, how you can make snacks look good whilst you are sick in bed. And you can pick at it when you want. Add some mini sausages, and cold chicken nuggets to bulk the savouries out and you are done. You can also make this a vegetarian meal as you wish too.

Kruidnoten Biscuits
You may not have heard of these but they are little cookies that I bought in The Netherlands. They are cinnamon biscuits, the same as the speculaas you would get when you go for a coffee in a coffee shop. But they are so much better! They are small like sweets and shaped like a burger bun.

They are traditionally associated with Sinterklaas, who is the Dutch Santa Claus and they sell them in the run up to Sinterklaas day (6th December). I bought some back from the Netherlands on my last trip and I kept some in a canister by my bed to nibble on whilst I had Covid.
