Do Your Kids Love Being Outside?

Kids love to be outside and they can make as much mess as they like because you don’t really need to clean up after them. Lots of activities can be washed away, like outside chalking or painting. Outdoor activities are a great way to get the kids outside. Instead of sitting in front of the tv or playing on their gadgets. Here are some great ideas for having some free outdoor fun for kids that you will all love to do.

If you go out for a walk, you can start collecting little bits and pieces for them to have their outdoor fun. So pick up conkers, fur cones, stones, and flowers to press.

Stone Painting Is Great Outdoor Fun For Kids

This became huge in lockdown one, where people would paint stones of hope. And place them around their local area for others to find. Stones come in all types of shapes and sizes, so your kids can use their imagination to design different things on them. Gather some different shapes and sizes of stones when you are out. Look for heart-shaped stones as they are fun. Or stones with holes in them, that you can put string through and hang them somewhere.

Use some acrylic or poster paints to get them to paint the stones. They might want to draw a design, or they might just use one colour to cover the stone. Whatever they do, it is their design and they will be happy with it. When the stone is dry, cover it with a couple of coats of clear varnish to make them last longer.

Leaf Painting With Kids

Take a walk somewhere where there are loads of trees. A park or local woodland is a good start, let the kids run off their energy and collect some different leaves as you walk. talk about the leaves and how different trees have different leaves. You can talk about why they fall in the autumn and how some trees are evergreen. Then talk about what you can do with the leaves that you pick up off the floor. Maybe your kids want to make a collage out of them. Or maybe they want to put paint on them and print with them.

With older kids, they can lay the leaves underneath some paper and they can rub some chalk or a crayon over the top. They could also do chalk rubbings over the bark of the tree.

Fur Cone Bird Feeder

What you need:

You can make so many different types of bird feeders. Do you remember being a kid and running out of the classroom clutching your birdfeeder made from an old yoghurt pot? These days they can be made with so much more imagination like this fur cone bird feeder, and it is better for the environment because no plastic is used.

  • Fur cones
  • Sugar-free peanut butter
  • birdseed
  • A baking tray or sheet of greaseproof paper
  • A piece of string or wool

Take your fur cone and tie your string around the top. This is to hang it from a tree for the birds to access it. Then using a knife, smother the fur cone in peanut butter. Make sure it goes right into the gaps because you need it to be able to stick the birdseed to the cone.

Spread the birdseed out onto the baking tray or greaseproof paper, then roll the fur cone over the bird seed. make sure that you get seed into all of the gaps. And then hang it outside for the birds to feed on. You can hang it from a tree, a fence post, or even the railings of a balcony. It means the birds can find something tasty to eat, even as the weather gets a bit colder. This activity doesn’t take long to do at all and can be done any time of the year.

Outdoor Fun For Kids By Growing Flowers And Vegetables

Give your kids a little patch of the garden where they can grow their own vegetables or flowers. As well as fun, it can be quite educational. Give them some seeds to grow in little pots (yoghurt pots with holes poked in the bottom work well). Then watch them become excited as they see the plants shoot out of the soil. As the plants get bigger you can put them in the ground. This is outdoor fun for kids an activity they will love.

Growing runner beans is good for them. You can make it magical for them by polishing up some coppers (clean them in vinegar) and scattering them at the bottom of the beanstalk. They then think that there is a giant at the top of the beanstalk with loads of gold coins. Scatter a few coins every morning, before your kids go out there.

Growing food that they can eat is also good for them because you might not normally be able to get them to eat tomatoes. But if they grow them in the garden, they are more likely to eat them for dinner.
