When you choose a mascara, you have so much to think about. It isn’t as simple as just walking into a shop and buying mascara because there are so many different ones and they are a variety of budgets, you can get them from £1 up to £40. Mascara’s come in a variety of colours and you can choose from clear to black, but as a lady gets older, you might want to swap to a brown or black/brown.

You also need to think about what you want the mascara to do. You can get a lengthening mascara or a volumizing mascara or even a combination of them both but did you know it isn’t all down to the actual mascara but it is more down to the mascara wand?

So What Do The Mascara Wands Do?

Curved wands are designed like this so they sit perfectly under your lashes and the bristles get right into the root of the lashes and coat them to give volume.

Tapered wands will help to get into the corners of the lashes so that the mascara is applied all along the length of the lash. A tapered brush will give you a dramatic cat-eye look and using a darker mascara will give you a dramatic look.

Micro wands are good for so many reasons. Do you know the saying ‘less is more’? Well, that is the case with this wand. Because it is so small and it can coat the lower lashes a lot better. Using a micro brush also means that you are less likely to have clumpy mascara. And you get a more defined look.

Ball Tip wands are designed to get right into the hard-to-reach lashes. And often you can find a ball tip wand on the end of a normal mascara. So you get the best of both worlds in a wand. Sometimes you can buy a mascara wand with just a ball tip on the end. Getting into the hard-to-reach lashes means you get an equal cover of all of the lashes.

Fat wands are the best for big voluminous lashes. They coat the lashes right from the root and help you to lift the lashes giving you volume. This is my personal favourite type of brush.

Tips On How To Choose A Mascara

It is always a good idea to keep old mascara wands that work with you. Then if they discontinue the mascara you will be able to use your old wands in a different mascara.

Don’t pump your mascara! Because it will push air into the tube and it will dry the mascara.

Always buy waterproof mascara if you are going to a wedding or funeral where you are likely to cry. Waterproof mascaras can be identified by the blue stripe around the mascara tube. Or the tube will be light blue.
