How to Cope When Your Plane Diverts: Tips for Passengers

Experiencing a diverted flight can be an unexpected and sometimes stressful situation for travellers. It doesn’t matter how well travelled you are, it can cause anxiety among the best of us. Whether due to weather conditions, technical issues, or other unforeseen circumstances, being rerouted to a different airport can disrupt travel plans and leave passengers feeling disoriented. However, there are steps that you can take to cope with such situations and make the experience as smooth as possible. When your plane diverts, you need to know what to look forward to.

My major tip is if you ever do travel, always carry your passport, even if you are travelling within your own country, you could get diverted to another one. You will need a passport to enter the country, even if it’s a short diversion.

Stay Calm When Your Plane Diverts

First and foremost, it’s essential to remain calm and composed. While a diverted flight can be frustrating, panicking will only add to the stress. Take deep breaths and remind yourself that airline crews are trained to handle these situations efficiently. If you are travelling alone with children, you need to keep calm for them as well as yourself.

Follow Crew Instructions On The Plane

Listen carefully to the instructions provided by the flight crew, chances are that they will know about as much as you. They will let you about the reason for the diversion, the new airport you will be landing at, and any necessary safety procedures. Listening to them will help ensure everyone’s safety and facilitate a smoother transition. It is usually the captain who will announce the diversion.

Communicate with Airline Staff

Once you’ve landed at the diverted airport, talk with the airline or airport staff to get information about the next steps. They can provide updates on the situation, including potential flight rebooking options. It is likely to be absolute chaos to start with, but eventually, they will find you somewhere to stay. They will also make some arrangements for onward travel. Be patient, as they may be dealing with a high volume of inquiries from other passengers. Please don’t get angry, because it is not their fault.

Stay Informed When Your Plane Diverts Somewhere Different

Keep yourself informed about the situation by checking for updates via the airline’s mobile app, website, or airport information displays. Understanding the status of your flight and any alternative arrangements will help you make informed decisions about your next steps.

Be Flexible With Travel Plans

Flexibility is key when dealing with diverted flights. Understand that the airline may need time to assess the situation and make necessary arrangements. Be open to alternative travel plans, such as taking a connecting flight or arranging ground transportation to your final destination. When I was diverted to Cologne, I should have looked at taking a train to Brussels and then Eurostar on from there. Or even looking at getting a Flix bus back to London. But I waited for the next available flight.

Stay Comfortable Whilst You Wait

While awaiting further instructions when your plane diverts, focus on staying comfortable. If you are diverted overnight, the airline must cover the cost of a hotel, somewhere for you to rest. They are also obliged to cover the cost of food and drink whilst you are waiting. So take the opportunity to stretch your legs, grab a snack or meal, and stay hydrated. Many airports offer amenities such as lounges, Wi-Fi access, and charging stations to help make your wait more comfortable.

Stay Positive Throughout The Ordeal

Keeping a positive attitude can go a long way in coping with the situation. Remember that diversions are a part of air travel, and while inconvenient, they are typically resolved with minimal disruption. Use the experience as an opportunity to exercise patience, resilience, and adaptability. If your airline do not help you, you can contact CAA
