Winter weather can be really harsh on the skin. And this leads to annoying dryness, flakiness, and irritation. Changing your skincare routine during the winter months can help keep your skin hydrated and healthy. It can make a huge difference between sore patches on your skin and being comfortable through the winter. Here’s a basic winter skincare routine you can follow throughout the harsh winter months.

Cleaning Your Face For Your Winter Skincare

There are a few different ways to do this. Some people like a 2 or 3-step cleansing regime. Others just want to get it over and done with a one-step process. Whatever way you like to cleanse, here are good ways to do it. However you do it, you need to get that old make up off!

Use a mild, hydrating cleanser to avoid stripping your skin of its natural oils. Look for a product with ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. Exfoliate to get rid of dead skin cells and deeper dirt on your face. Limit exfoliation to 1-2 times a week or it will add to the dryness of your skin and it can irritate you. Choose a gentle exfoliant with ingredients like lactic acid or salicylic acid. Lastly, apply a hydrating toner to balance your skin’s pH levels and prepare it for subsequent products. Toners with ingredients like chamomile or rose water can be soothing.

You can simply have a one-step process to clean your skin, and all you need is micellar water. These are hydrating for your skin. They are quick to use and take up so much less space in your bathroom.

Moisturising Your Skin

A serum is more intense than a moisturiser and can be used alone or with a moisturiser. Use a serum containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or vitamin C to boost hydration and protect your skin from environmental damage. Consider adding a serum with ingredients like niacinamide for additional benefits. A good niacinamide serum helps in minimising pores, balancing oil production, and evening out skin tone. Choose a rich, emollient moisturiser that will provide deep hydration. Look for ingredients such as shea butter, ceramides, or squalane. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, go for a non-comedogenic moisturiser.

If you use an eye cream, choose one that will hydrate and look after the fine lines. Look for ingredients like peptides or hyaluronic acid.

Protect Your Skin

Don’t skip sunscreen, even in winter. UV rays can still damage your skin, and snow can reflect sunlight, increasing exposure. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 and apply it every morning, then throughout the day if you live in a snowy area.

Protect your lips with a nourishing lip balm containing ingredients like shea butter, beeswax, or coconut oil. Reapply throughout the day as needed to avoid getting cracked lips and sore parts around your mouth. If the area around your mouth becomes sore, you can use the lip balm around your mouth.

A Good Winter Skincare Routine Starts At Home

Consider using a humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air, especially if you have the heat on. This can prevent your skin from becoming overly dry. When you leave your house, you go from a hot house to cold weather. This is going to hurt your skin, so you will end up using more and more moisturisers.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Your body is a temple, so look after it.

Remember that everyone’s skin is different, so it’s essential to pay attention to how your skin reacts to different products and adjust your routine accordingly. If you have specific skin concerns or conditions, get some tips and ideas from your doctor.
