Keep Your Hands Looking Younger

We consciously do not even notice them, they are so natural for us: our hands. But precisely because we use them so extremely in everyday life, the signs of the times quickly show on our hands. We’ll show you what you can do to take proper care of your hands and keep your hands looking younger.

Protect your hands from UV light

Age spots are not stains that arise due to our age, but pigmentation disorders caused by high UV exposure. Of course, the older we get, the more UV radiation our skin has received, which is why the pigment spots become particularly visible. So we need to take extra care to keep our hands looking younger by keeping them from the sun.

If you don’t want to use sunscreen all the time, you should use gloves when working in the garden or driving convertibles. These also protect your skin from radiation and, when gardening, from injuries that can also make your hands look older.

Conceal conspicuous veins

Some have more, others a little less: noticeable, blue veins that mark our hands. These, too, can often make our hands look older. So that blue veins are not even more noticeable, you should definitely avoid nail polish colours that emphasize them even more. So steer clear of bluish-red tones and blue nail polishes in general. Find a nail polish colour that flatters your skin tone. It doesn’t always have to be nude, it can also be a strong colour.

If you don’t want to see the veins anymore, you can also buy special camouflage that covers the veins. However, you have to reapply this after every hand wash and wrinkles are accentuated by too much camouflage.

Add enough moisture

Particularly important so that the skin on your hands always remains soft and plump: You have to give your skin enough moisture. On the one hand, you can do this by drinking enough and by taking care of the outside world. Pamper your hands with a homemade hand peeling (mix one tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of sugar, add a splash of lemon juice). After that, you can bathe your hands in an oil bath. Urea-containing hand creams are suitable for everyday use.

Protect the nails

One cause that quickly makes hands look old: discoloured nails! Some of these can be traced back to illness, but our habits are often to blame. No big surprise: In smokers, the nails discolour from direct contact with the cigarette. In some cases, poor quality nail polish that stays on our nails for too long can make the nails appear yellow. Therefore, do not wear nail polish forever, but remove it regularly with acetone-free nail polish remover. After that, the right care with moisture is also important here.

Maintain neglected areas

There are also some little things that, in combination with the other points, make your hands look older than they should: calluses and dry cuticles. Calluses are a problem, especially in people who have to grab hold of their hands over and over again. This scarring usually subsides when the exposure stops. You can treat particularly stubborn calluses with plasters containing salicylic acid (available at the pharmacy). However, talk to your dermatologist about it before you start treating yourself.

But you can lend a hand on your cuticles yourself. Use a homemade nail oil to care for the sensitive area on your fingers. The more manicured your hands are, the younger they look.
