Back To School Essentials and Trends for 2024
As summer winds down, teens across the UK are gearing up for a new school year. We have already had emails preparing the children to go back to school. They have even had vape detector sensors put in school to prepare for the kids to go back! Whether it’s secondary school or sixth form, As a mother of a teenager myself, here are a few things that I have personally chosen with Matilda to make the transition back to school for year 10, much easier. Here are some school essentials to ensure they start the term in style, fully prepared, and excited for the year ahead.
1. Modern Learning Essentials Like Tech & Gadgets
- Smart Pens and Notebooks: For the tech-savvy teen, consider a smart pen that digitises notes as they write, or an erasable notebook that syncs with apps like Evernote. These tools are perfect for staying organised and reducing paper waste.
- Wireless Earbuds: Brands like Apple, Sony, and Samsung offer sleek, wireless earbuds with noise-cancelling features, ideal for commuting or focusing in noisy environments. But the cheaper versions work just as well. If your teen always loses stuff, then the cheaper ones are probably best! When I upgrade Matilda’s earbuds, she keeps the old ones as a backup set.
- Laptop/Tablet: A lightweight and powerful device like a Chromebook or an iPad with a keyboard can be a great thing to have for school research, writing essays, or remote learning and also having some downtime from school work. Matilda has an Asus notebook and it has done her well for a few years now.

2. Trendy and Functional Fashion & Accessories
- Sustainable Backpacks: Ethical fashion is on the rise. Consider eco-friendly backpacks made from recycled materials, offering both style and substance. Introducing this to our teens will help to prepare them for a sustainable future. This year was a nightmare for buying the right kind of backpack for Tilly.
- Customisable Phone Cases: Help them protect their phones with a case featuring their favourite band, TV show, or a personalised design. Also, get them a phone lanyard to put around their neck, this will stop them from having their phone stolen as they walk along the road.
- Statement Trainers: Whether it’s classic Converse or the latest Nike Air Max, a fresh pair of trainers is always a hit. Opt for something durable enough for school and stylish enough for weekends. Just make sure that they fit in with the school rules for uniforms, otherwise, it could be an expensive mistake.
- Durable Water Bottles: Encourage hydration with a BPA-free, insulated water bottle from brands that are perfect for keeping drinks cold all day. Whether it is a Stanley Cup or a regular water bottle, take them shopping to choose one.

3. School Essentials Like Cool And Practical Stationary
- Personalised Planners: Help them stay on top of assignments and exams with a planner featuring their name or favourite design. Planners are a place to put notes from school as well as the secrets that they want to share.
- High-Quality Stationery Sets: In school, it’s like they have to have the best stationery and pens. It was the same when I was at school 35 years ago. Unique pens, highlighters, and notebooks with vibrant designs can make note-taking more enjoyable. I do miss the days of Smiggle, where we would spend hours choosing the best stationary stuff.
4. Create the Perfect Study Space At Home
- LED Desk Lamps: Adjustable lighting is key for late-night study sessions. Go for lamps with colour-changing features to set the scene for studying or built-in wireless chargers, so they can charge up their tech as they use the lamps.
- Notice Boards: Cork or magnetic boards are great for pinning important reminders, timetables, or inspirational quotes.
- Study Chair Cushions: Ergonomic support doesn’t have to be boring. Cushions with memory foam in trendy patterns can make study time more comfortable.
School Essentials To Support Their Mental And Physical Health
- Mindfulness Journals: A guided journal can help teens manage stress and reflect on their goals and achievements. They can share their anger, their dreams and their worries. I found out Tilly was having problems again by seeing scribbles in her book.
- Fitness Trackers: With features like heart rate monitoring and step tracking, devices like the Fitbit inspire teens to stay active.
- Skincare Kits: Tailored to teen skin, consider gifting a set of gentle, dermatologist-approved skincare products. Make it into a period care kit by making it into a basket with face masks and chocolate. Also, add some sanitary products etc

6. Books & Entertainment: For Downtime and Relaxation
- Popular Teen Fiction: Find out which books your teenager is into. Reading takes them right into their imagination and helps them relax.
- Board Games & Puzzles: Engage their minds with strategy games or challenging puzzles that they can enjoy with friends and family. Have family nights where you play board games with your teen.
- Streaming Service Subscriptions: Give the gift of entertainment with a subscription to Netflix, Disney+, or Spotify for those well-deserved study breaks. Music can help them relax and switch off when they need to.
7. Hobbies & Interests: Nurture Their Passions
- Art Supplies: High-quality sketchbooks, watercolour sets, or digital drawing tablets for aspiring artists. Splash out on some lovely Posca pens for them to enjoy colouring in and art projects.
- Sports Gear: If they’re into a sport, consider new equipment, like a football, tennis racket, or yoga mat. Splash out on some new sportswear for them
- Cooking Kits: For the budding chef, a beginner’s cooking kit or a teen-friendly cookbook can spark a new hobby.
