Last Updated on: 23rd February 2025, 11:51 am
This is a personal letter to my daughter, Tilly. She struggles like most teenagers and I wanted to share some advice that I would give her. My daughter is a strong, powerful person but she doesn’t realise it. When she travels she has so much confidence and can take on anything in the world. She will Climb mountains and embrace so many different things. But when she is home, everything is a struggle for her confidence. She is just like any other teenager, I guess. But here are 5 ways to boost your confidence as a teenager
Dear Tilly,
It might not feel like it, but I was a teenager once and I can remember how difficult it was. The worries that my friends didn’t like me, the stress over having the right shoes to fit in. My mum used to buy me the ugliest shoes and forced me to wear them. I used to wait until I got on the school bus to change my shoes. I needed to fit in and not be the odd person. And I was never allowed to choose my own shoes and clothes at your age. I hated it. So I know how it is important to you to have the right stuff. Thats why I always let you choose your stuff. Apart from the school skirt, that will stay below your knees. I know you roll it up, we all did that as teenagers too. So how can I help you with your confidence and prevent that anxiety that consumes you?
Set Small, Achievable Goals To Boost Your Confidence As A Teenager
You need to set yourself small goals. When you have goals that need to be finished, it is scary if it is too much. But breaking that goal up into smaller manageable goals will help you. If you have to write a 2000-word essay, Break it up into smaller sections, and work through them one by one. Every time you finish a smaller goal, smile and feel confident that you are part way through.
If it is about tidying your room, look at a small area and tidy that first. Then move on to another section and another. Then before you know it, you will have finished that room.
Focus On Your Strengths And Not The Negatives
When you focus on your strengths, it makes it so much easier to finish tasks or even get through the day. It helps you to be positive and that in turn builds your confidence. Making you happier and ready to face the world. I know you have had problems with ‘friends’ in the past, where they said some pretty nasty negative things about you. This did knock your confidence for a long time. But thinking of your positives will outweigh the negatives. Ask your friends and family what you excel at. Ask them what your positive traits are. Then spend some time developing your strengths and soon you will be invincible
Boost Your Teenage Confidence And Practice Positive Self-Talk
The way you talk to yourself can significantly impact your confidence. Positive self-talk can reinforce your self-worth and abilities. Replace the negative thoughts with positive affirmations. For example, instead of thinking, “I can’t do this,” tell yourself, “I can learn how to do this.” Write down affirmations and repeat them daily. Like when you were little and you used to look in the mirror and say ‘I am clever, I am beautiful and I am awesome’ Changing your mindset can completely change the way you feel.

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
I know you hate stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things. I know you struggle to go into a shop alone and buy something. And I know that I push you to do it, but it is for your good and I am always there watching you. Trying uncomfortable things, helps you grow and realise that you’re capable of more than you think. Each time you push your boundaries, you gain confidence. And as you gain confidence, you grow as a person. Start with small steps, like joining a new club. Try speaking up in class, or trying a new hobby. Over time, these actions will become easier, and your comfort zone will expand.
Surround Yourself with Positive People
I do get angry when people around you are so negative. I lose my shit because I know you are better than that. The people around you can either lift you up or bring you down. Positive, supportive friends and family members can boost your confidence by encouraging you and celebrating your successes. Spend your time with people who make you feel good about yourself. Avoid those who are overly critical or negative. Engaging in positive social circles will reinforce your self-esteem and help you stay confident. My own mother was horrible to me and your brother and sister. She was always negative and critical of me and them. I have no idea why I waited until I was 37 to tell her that she wasn’t welcome in my life if we were never good enough for her. The moment she called you ‘That baby’ was a sign that she was going to do the same with you as she was with them. I was strong enough to say that was enough. And you have your own Nanny Jan and Grandad now, who stepped up to be your grandparents.
You will work it out, you will build your confidence and it will take you far. You have the whole world in front of you. There is so much adventure out there for you if you manage to boost your confidence as a teenager.
