With autumn getting into full swing and winter around the corner, it’s time to update not only your own but also your toddler’s wardrobe. Of course, you want the little one to look and feel great, but there are some practical things to consider when dressing the kids in the cold season. Here’s our guide on how to dress your toddler in autumn and winter.

Layering Basics To Dress Your Toddler

In the cold seasons, the key to dressing up kids is layering. The layers protect from moisture, wind and frost. They are also easy to quickly take off when you get into a warm room or if the sun comes out.

The first layer should be an item that protects from moisture, so choose synthetic fabrics (e.g. polyester) or wool. The tops and leggings should be of a tighter fit so you can easily layer on top.

The second layer should be insulating – it will keep the body warmth in and the cold out. The best options are pieces made from fleece, down, wool or polyester fiberfill. These hoodies, trousers and sweatshirts should be comfortable and allow free movement.

Lastly – the outer layer. These are your rain jackets, down jackets and coats that protect from snow, rain, wind and other elements. Your best choices are waterproof yet breathable (e.g. Gore-Tex) and also comfortable for layering and movement. If your toddler’s outerwear is not waterproof, you should add a waterproof jacket as additional protection. 

Movement And Comfort Are Key

Warmth is the number one priority; however, make sure you consider how freely will your child be able to move in the puffy jackets and pants. They might look cute, but if they keep falling over or aren’t able to climb stairs and play, you will need to look for another option. 

Same goes for one of the warmest options for winter – snowsuits. If your toddler is potty-trained, you might want to go for a two-piece, so you make your bathroom breaks easier. 

Leave Cotton For Summer

Cotton clothes are great for a warm summer day, but in winter it’s one of the worst fabrics to choose. Cotton absorbs rain, snow, sweat, turning the clothing wet and making your kiddos shiver! Instead of cotton opt for fleece or wool.

Protect From Frostbite

Frostbite is dangerous, and even if your child is wearing the puffiest warmest jacket, their face and hands can still get frozen if not protected! 

Little kid’s skin is very sensitive, so even if it doesn’t feel very cold to you, make sure they’re wearing gloves, warm socks and hats (pick one that covers their ears properly).

Get Quality Shoes

There are some great autumn and winter shoe options for the little feet. Having tall boots is also a big plus as it will prevent snow and rain from getting into the shoes.

All kids are different, so even if some of your friends swear by the warmest fleeces and jackets, your little one might get hot quicker and need some alternatives. Either way, make sure you remember all the layering basics!
