Get Your Kids Active This Summer

‘I do enough exercise at school‘ or ‘I want to play on my phone‘ Some of the excuses coming out of my 11-year-olds mouth. Lockdown has been hard on us all. Spending most of 2020 shielding her from other people to keep her safe. This means we have all got out of the habit of exercising. Then when you start getting back to normal, you feel more lethargic. So exercise is really the last thing on your mind. So the weather is getting warmer and summer is on its way, now is the time to get your kids active. Despite Tilly telling me that she does enough exercise, I still want her out there and getting fresh air.

Thinking about different ways to get her out there was easier than I thought. Exercise for kids isn’t just about running around. It is all about making it fun for the kids. You can get the kids out there with a hula hoop and have hula competitions with them. But you can also get them racing on their scooter, skateboard or roller skates. This is what we have done with Tilly. We were gifted some products from Skates.co.uk for Tilly to try out and give our opinion on.

Safety First

As with all scooters, bikes, skates and skateboards, you need to think about keeping your kids safe as well as keeping them active. So when you order your scooter or skates, you can also order a helmet and knee pads. When Tilly was younger we used to always pop knee and elbow pads on her to protect her. Nowadays as she is 11, we don’t use them. But one thing that is always a must is a helmet. There is nothing more important than protecting your child’s head/ brain when they are playing out. Especially as they get more adventurous as they get older. Kids often think they are invisible but they obviously are not.

We ordered a Black Skate Scooter Helmet. This is a more grown-up helmet for someone of her age. It is a plain black helmet and it comes with some stickers for your child to decorate it themselves. If you have a Cricut, you could also decorate it that way. But it looks just as awesome as a plain helmet. The helmets on the website are available in various colours. Make sure you use a tape measure to measure your child’s head to get the right size helmet.

The Helmet is designed with a lower cut shell shape. This is better for comfort and fit and the straps are adjustable with 2 tone straps and a buckle to adjust it to fit. The helmet is £17.95 to buy.

Dominator Cadet Pro Stunt Scooter

Get your kids active on the Dominator Cadet Pro Stunt Scooter this summer. Previously Tilly has had a small fold-up scooter, so this was her first stunt scooter. This scooter doesn’t fold up, so it is more sturdy for doing stunts. The scooter is 77.8 cm high and it is perfect for kids aged between 8 and 14 years old.

You just know your child will want to do tricks and stunts on there. So here are is the lingo you need to know to talk to them. The part that they stand on is called the deck and this one features a 6061 T6 aluminium deck, the aluminium makes it more robust for the stunts. The steel bar is the bar that goes upwards from the deck. This bar spins 360 degrees for the tricks and stunts. It weighs 4.37kgs. Now you just need to know some of the trick names

• Hop – This is when they hop on their scooter with both wheels leaving the ground at the same time.
• Fakie – This is when they ride their scooter backwards.
• Manual – This is when they ride on just the back wheel of their scooter
• Nose pivot – This is when they spin their scooter deck using the front wheel, but they don’t jump

The scooter that we ordered was black and grey (although we say it’s black and silver). This scooter is perfect for kids that want something a little more than the basic scooter. But they are not ready for a more advanced scooter. It is also an excellent price for a stunt scooter at £64.95 but on a special offer of £46.95 at the moment (price correct on 04/07/21).

Roller Derby Adjustable Roller Skates

Roller skating has been popular with kids for decades, and they are still popular now. Tilly is at the age where she can’t quite cope with inline skates. But she equally wanted a pair of skates that looked grown-up for her. She chose Roller Derby adjustable roller skates. They cost £39.99, but they are on offer at £34.99 at the moment (price correct on 04/07/21)

Although they come in pink and white, Tilly chose the black and red skates. They are advertised as boys skates, but I think you will all agree that they look as awesome on a girl as a boy. The Roller Derby Trac Star V2’s are for shoe sizes 2-5 and you just press a button to adjust the sizes to your child’s foot. Tilly is size 3, so these have plenty of growing space for her. The roller skates do up with clips instead of laces, making it easier for them to put the skates on and off.

You can use these skates outside or on the skating rink, they have polyurethane 54mm wheels, for the best performance when they skate around. The wheels have a good grip for skating and doing stunts, making them less slippery. The skates are comfortable to wear and they are not too heavy. You can also decorate them with free stickers from the website when you buy the skates.

Other Kids Outdoor Activities

There are so many other ways to get your kids active this summer. Sports like badminton or tennis are popular with the kids these days, especially around Wimbledon time. Then there is also the Olympics coming up, so the kids will feel motivated to get out there. We also have Euro 20, so football is becoming popular this summer. There are so many different sports to get your kids excited this summer.
