Body Confidence In A Teen

If you are the parent of a teen, then I am sure you would have had this conversation with your kids. So many times our teens look at their own growing bodies and then they look at social media. But social media tells them that they have to look as skinny as they can be. And they have to wear tons of makeup. Our teens are made to feel ugly, by the comments on social media posts. Half-naked girls showing their bodies off will get a lot of attention. And it makes our girls think their own bodies are inadequate. Body confidence in a teen is a big thing, and we need to support them all the way.

There are many ways you can support your teen with body confidence. With Tilly, she covers up as much as she can. Even in a pool, she will wear a T-shirt and a beach dress. But this year we are travelling by train throughout the summer, so we talked about what clothes she will wear. She has decided that she wants to cut down on the clothes she carries. And she is going to wear pretty tankini tops as tops so if she gets hot whilst backpacking, she will stay cool.

What She Is Wearing Whilst We Travel In Europe This Summer

Tilly has been looking around at tankini tops and the ones that she found were on the Lands End website. She wanted some tops that were fashionable, easy to back into her back pack and were dual purpose. She chose Womens Halter Neck Tankini Top because she loved the square neck and halter neck tie. This makes it a beautiful tankini to wear and it can double as an elegant top. On cooler days she can wear a wrap top or t-shirt over the top.

The tankini top has UPF 50, so it gives you protection against UVA and UVB rays. This protects you from the sun. The swimming top can be handwashed and it dried overnight after we washed it.

You can mix and match the tankini top with any swimming bottoms that you want. Another reason Tilly chose the black tankini top was so she could mix and match it with any swimming pants. We all love a mix and match outfit!

The Womens Halter Neck Tankini Top is £65 normally, but at the moment it is £26 when you use code M5Y2. We love this tankini top. It is comfortable for her to wear, the cups are soft and supportive for her. The design is beautiful, it is classy and it is a sure fire winner this summer.

Tilly is wearing a size a size 12. We partnered the tankini top with Women’s Tummy Control Bikini Bottoms. She doesnt need the tummy control as she is a teenager, but they are high waisted. That makes them more comfortable to wear on long days out. It also means as they are high waisted, she will feel more comfortable wearing them with a smaller bikini top. Again as they are black, she can easily mix and match them with different tops.

How To Talk About Body Confidence In A Teen

I am lucky because Tilly has grown up in a world of social media. Where I am a blogger and always post on social media. I have always talked to her about how easy it is to fake things online. So here are some tips on how to talk about body confidence in teens.

Go Through Her Social Media

Either take your daughter’s social media away or go through it with them and unfollow the accounts that make your daughter feel bad about herself. There are so many accounts these days that offer genuine body positivity images like Dove. They show real women and all of their body parts that make them unique.

Get your daughter to find things she loves about her body

Your teen might have a scar on her chin that she hates and thinks is the worst part of her body. But that scar holds a memory. Talk to her about the reason for the scar, and encourage her to think of it positively. Also, she needs to think about what she loves about her body, more than the stuff she hates about her body. She will soon realise that she loves more about her body than what she hates.

Forget About Numbers Whilst Building Body Confidence In A Teen

Whether it’s the numbers on the scales or the number of calories in her food. She needs to stop and walk away from the numbers! The more they count calories, the more they will worry about putting on weight. Then they will go on the weighing scales and weigh themselves because they want to lose weight. Taking the numbers away will give your daughter something else to focus on. And it will slowly build body confidence in a teen.

Teach Them To Dress Confidently

If they feel bad when they get dressed and they don’t feel confident, you need to encourage them to dress for their body. Get them to stop hiding behind baggy and frumpy clothes. These will not be flattering and they will make them feel really rubbish. Get them to dress to accentuate the best parts.

Get them to choose the clothes that they like, and let them wear them as they want. Just as long as they feel comfortable

Encourage Them To Have Some Photos Done

Kids with no body confidence will hide from a camera. So encourage your kids to have some photos done. Start by taking some snaps with your phone, and get them to pose with something. So the focus isn’t really on them. Then as they get more confident, get them to pose for their photos. Show them how to stand (or sit) to make them look better.
