How To Help Change Your Career
Taking the leap to change your career can be a daunting prospect filled with uncertainty.
Lockdown left many of us with time to rethink our priorities; the things that we once deemed important, may no longer seem so.
If you’re realising in mid-life that your career is not for you, you’re not alone. Research shows that 82% of people who changed careers after the age of 45 reported success in doing so.
But a career change isn’t a decision to be made lightly, so here are three things for you to consider when making that change.
Do Something with Value
There’s no point leaving one unrewarding job for another, just to find yourself wanting to jump ship again a few years down the line.
No job is a one-size-fits-all – that’s why we all have different talents! If you’re drawn to the idea of helping others, there are many caring and compassionate careers that will leave you with a strong feeling of accomplishment at the end of each day.
Teaching is a fantastic example, although one that requires a little retraining. But a distance learning foundation degree in Early Years and Education from Anglia Ruskin University will set you on the right track for a teaching qualification or a bachelor’s degree, and allow you to earn while studying as well.
Whatever you choose, find a role worth changing careers for.
Take Stock of Your Skills
There’s more to you than your qualifications, and not all skills are gained through academic study.
Over your life, you’ve probably amassed skills that you had no idea would be valuable to a potential employer. This handy guide is a great way for you to assess the skills you already have.
Once you have an overall picture of your skill set, you’ll be able to work to improve areas that are lacking. Even better, if you find the time, learn a new skill such as a second language.
This will go a long way to improving your prospects, especially if you’ve made the decision to venture into an entirely new industry.

Take Your Time
Big changes to your careers constitute a significant life event. You need to make sure that you have thoroughly considered the pros and cons.
Will the change reduce, or add to, your stress? If your new career isn’t going to make you happy, then there’s not really much point in making the change, and even less so if your new role will cause an increase to your stress levels.
It’s also vital that you sit down with your finances. Will you be able to make ends meet if you change from your current profession? If you’re heading off into uncharted waters, the chances are you’re going to need to start again on the bottom rung of the ladder. Unfortunately, that might mean taking a pay cut.
Changing your career can be an exciting adventure at any age, but also one that should be taken seriously. Figure out what’s right for you and find a profession that will make you happy.
