How To Book A Weekend In Milan For £50 Each

Last Updated on: 20th March 2026, 07:59 am

Tilly was turning 16 and didn’t want a party or to celebrate it anywhere local. I am happy with that because she is happier in her own company. But then I was doing one of my favourite hobbies and looking for cheap flights when I came up with the perfect weekend in Milan for the three of us to enjoy. I will break down the journey below.

The 4-star hotel and the flights cost £50 each. There are other costs on the trip if you want to add them.

Flights To Bergamo For A Weekend In Milan

The flights were booked about 6 weeks before we travelled, and they cost us £15 each. I found these on Skyscanner by typing in London to Everywhere in the search panel. Then you add the dates that you want to travel. This is literally how I always find my cheap flights. Then I go through to booking. For Milan, it did say that the different airlines were landing and flying out from different airports, so you couldn’t leave your car at Stansted and then pick it up from Luton. You can choose to stick with the same airline and airports, but it will cost you more money.

As we were literally going for the weekend, we just took small under-seat backpacks. The flight we were on left Stansted half an hour late at 10.30 pm, but I expected this as it was the end of the day. We landed at Bergamo and got through passport control by 2 am. Then we went and found a place to sit down and nap for a couple of hours.

Bergamo to Como

Lake Como is huge, but when you are on a tight schedule, Como is a great little place to visit. We took the first bus to Bergamo train station for 3 euros. The first bus leaves Bergamo Airport at 4.50 am. You do have the option of the Flix bus going to Milan; they travel all night. At Bergamo station, we used machines to buy train tickets to Como. This was so easy to do; what wasn’t easy was finding where the replacement bus travelled from. Do not forget to activate your tickets before you start your train journey; there is a small green machine to do this.

We had to get a bus to Ponte San Pietro, and when we arrived at 5.30 am, it was very rundown and a little scary in the dark. But I guess it is all part of the adventure! When we were there, we joined a train to Monza. The on-board staff were helpful, telling us where to change and how many stops it was. We changed at Monza and arrived in Como about 7.30 am. The train from Bergamo to Como costs 7 euros.

What To Do In Como

When you arrive in Como, it is 1 euro to use the toilet each! We rely on cards when we travel and hadn’t had time to get cash from an ATM yet. So we couldn’t use the loo. However, there is a restaurant where we paid an eye-watering 4 euros for a drink of Pepsi Max, but we could use the loo for free. We gathered our thoughts before taking a walk to the lake. It was a lovely early morning walk and very easy to walk, with a walking stick.

On the lake was a cabin where you could buy a ticket for a boat ride. They had tickets to Bellagio, where I wanted to go, but time restraints meant we couldn’t do it. We will need to return another time. We paid 10 euros for 3 boat tickets around the lake, and the trip would take just over an hour. 10 euros for us all to experience Lake Como was amazing! We went to find a supermarket to get some pastries for breakfast and drinks. This cost us 5 euros for all of us, and we just sat on the lakeside and had a picnic breakfast.

After the boat trip, we took a walk through the town of Como on our way back to the station. I call it a walk through the city, but the girls called me out and knew I was lost! Upon arriving back at Como station, we purchased tickets for Milan, which cost us 5 euros each.

Navigating Your Weekend In Milan

We chose a train to come into Milan Central, where you can leave your luggage at the left luggage if you wish. We went onto the metro, where there were ticket machines and huge queues! But I noticed a sign that said you could use your card to tap on and off. So to save queuing, we simply did that. We had no idea what the cost would be, but we didn’t really care. By the end of the day, after hopping on and off public transport all day, our costs on public transport were 5 euros.

The public transport for our weekend in Milan was so easy to use! I normally worry about understanding it, but we had no problems at all. We took the metro to the Duomo, where we got tickets to go inside; these were free due to having an access disability card. And afterwards we went to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade. This was free, and it was so pretty inside. You can also visit the Milan Bull, a mosaic on the floor where people go to spin round for good luck and fortune. This is free, but there is usually a queue. Actually, not even a queue, it was a free-for-all! We then visited the Milan Winter Olympic tent in the Duomo square, which was free to visit.

Where We Had Pizza For Our Weekend In Milan

We chose to eat at Pizza & Mozzerella, so we took the metro to one of the many restaurants in Milan, and it was definitely the right choice. We paid 41 euros for 3 people to have 3-course meals and a couple of soft drinks each. The food was even too much, and we ended up taking some away with us in a pizza box. If you are in Milan, you should really check these restaurants out. We found restaurant prices in Milan very good, and even the places in the Duomo square were not tourist-trap prices.

Where We Stayed

When we booked our trip to Milan, it was right in the middle of the 2026 Winter Paralympics. So accommodation was expensive, and we struggled to find somewhere cheap. So we looked outside of Milan. We found a 4-star hotel in Soronno, a town midway between Milan and Malpensa airport. It was also not far from Lake Como. The hotel was called Just Hotel. It was £109 a night, but we had money off in a Hotel.com account, so we got the room for £60 for three of us. This included breakfast. The train from Milan to Soronno was 3 euros, and the train from Soronno to Malpensa airport was 9 euros. We loved the hotel, it was perfect and a real treat because we normally stay in budget accommodation.

Flying Home From Malpensa To London

We flew home with Wizz Air, and the flights were £15 each for a Sunday lunchtime flight. We didn’t book and pay for seats, so we were all in different parts of the plane, but it was a two-hour flight, so it was fine. I had assistance at Malpensa airport, so I didn’t see the girls after we checked in and printed boarding passes at the Wizz Air counter. I cannot fault the assistance at the airport; I just wish that I had been prepared to be separated. My anxiety was through the roof! When I got on the plane, I looked for the girls, and they were on there. The flight to Luton went without a hitch, and we were there in no time.

Would I Do It Again?

Absolutely, without a doubt. I am sure there is more to Milan, and we only scratched the surface. It would also be nice to see more of Lake Como. We had such a great weekend in Milan, and it was such a good price; it was cheaper than a weekend in London. If you want to do the same, remember to use Skyscanner to look at prices and watch people’s videos of their experience of where you are going.
