There is always something cosy about autumn: the changing colours, the slow cooker going on and the evenings getting darker. But what happens if you are not quite ready for all of this? What if you want the sunny weather to carry on? The answer is to find some hot destinations to visit in autumn!
We are lucky that it is easy to leave the UK; we have the option of driving via a ferry, we have the tunnel, and we can also fly from one of the dozens of airports. Some of the warmer destinations are only a couple of hours away, and you can have breakfast in the wet and rainy UK, and lunch in sunny Morocco!
Why Find Hot Destinations To Visit in Autumn?
As soon as the kids go back to school, the prices drop – a lot! So it is always a good time to look at going on holiday. Wherever you decide to go, there are always fewer crowds in the autumn, because everyone usually visits in the summer. Going away in the autumn also gives you a break from the cold and rainy weather. It is so good for your mental health, especially if you suffer from SAD or other winter mental health problems. Here are some great places to go in Autumn to get a bit of sun.
Hot Destinations To Visit In Autumn Like Cyprus
If you are looking for somewhere with hot weather, then Cyprus should be up there on your list of places to visit. September and October can still feel like summer over there. The average daytime temperature can still be in the 30s in September and as high as 27 in October. So you can still pack your swimsuit and swim in the sea.
Paphos and Larnaca are popular destinations to visit in Cyprus, and there is more to these towns than beaches. You can explore ancient ruins, visit traditional villages, discover beautiful coastal walks or head into the Troodos Mountains. Because the intense summer heat has eased off, you can enjoy sightseeing more and feel more comfortable as you do it.

The Canary Islands
Although these islands belong to Spain, they are actually situated off the coast of Africa. So they enjoy the African weather late into the autumn and winter. Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria are fantastic choices if you want reliable sunshine without travelling too far from home. October temperatures can reach the mid-20s, and the islands stay warm in November too.
If you are looking for a family-friendly island, you should book Tenerife. One day you can be relaxing by the pool, and the next day you could be exploring Mount Teide. If you like dramatic volcanic landscapes, then choose Lanzarote, and if you want a mixture of beaches and mountains, then Gran Canaria is for you. The Canary Islands have something to offer for everyone.
Madeira
Madeira might not be a place that you instantly think about when it comes to Autumn getaways. But the weather is still warm, and temperatures reach 27 in September, 26 in October and 24 in November. Madeira is a beautiful place to visit, and there is a lot to explore if you don’t want to spend your entire holiday by the hotel pool. There are lush green landscapes, colourful flowers and little villages to explore. There are some awesome walking routes to take. This is a place to visit if you still want a little autumn sunshine, but don’t like scorching hot weather.
Malta
Malta is another place that people often overlook when they are planning their autumn getaway. By autumn, the summer crowds are gone, and the weather is still warm enough to sit outside and enjoy the views. Or you could explore the island and enjoy being on the Med.
Valletta is the capital, and it is full of history, whilst Mdina feels like you are walking into a different world entirely. And in Malta you have the beautiful beaches, boat trips and so much Mediterranean food to try. The temperature can reach 30 in September, 27 in October and 24 in November.

The Algarve, Portugal
When you want temperatures in the 20s during the autumn, then the Algarve is perfect for you. The southern coast of Portugal has pleasantly warm temperatures in September and October, reaching 24 degrees. You get to explore the coastal towns without the summer crowds. If you want to wander around pretty villages, or visit dramatic cliffs and beaches, then Lagos is the place for you. You can also enjoy sitting outside a cafe in the sunshine, watching the locals go by. There are plenty of things to do with families, without needing to go to the beach every day, and there’s always an adventure to have.
Southern Spain
Southern Spain is another excellent option for some autumn sunshine. Whilst we were there at the end of October last year, the temperatures reached 32 degrees! Southern Spain offers so many different destinations to visit, and it’s also easily accessible to Africa for a day trip from Spain.
Málaga, the Costa del Sol and the beautiful cities of Andalusia have much warmer weather than we are used to at home. You have historic streets to explore that are usually decorated with loads of flowers and colour. You can visit local markets and eat tapas whilst sitting outside of restaurants. You also have the beaches for some relaxation on the warm days.
And if you want a city break rather than a traditional beach holiday, Seville is a wonderful choice. Autumn is much more comfortable for exploring than the height of the Spanish summer.
Morocco
If you are happy to travel a little further, Morocco can give you some seriously warm autumn weather. The flight time is usually 3 – 4 hours from the UK. With flights as cheap as £30 with Ryanair, it makes for a cheap break. Marrakech is still hot in the autumn, with temperatures reaching 30 on some days. You can book an all-inclusive trip or stay in the centre of the city. For coastal towns, you have Rabat, Casablanca, Agadir and Essaouira. You can visit the historic sites as well as relax on a beach. The Moroccan cities offer so much, like beautiful buildings and gardens as well as souks and many side streets to get lost in.

Egypt
For even more reliable heat, look a little further in the direction of Egypt. The Red Sea resorts, including Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada, can be particularly warm in October, with temperatures around 30°C. This makes Egypt a brilliant choice if what you really want is a late dose of summer. There are beautiful beaches, warm seas and plenty of opportunities for snorkelling and water activities. You can also choose an all-inclusive resort and simply spend a week doing absolutely nothing. Many resorts also offer trips to Pyramids and other historical sites, so also look out for those experiences.
Where Are Your Hot Destinations To Visit In Autumn?
Autumn doesn’t have to mean saying goodbye to sunshine. From the Canary Islands and Cyprus to Madeira, Malta and southern Spain, there are plenty of destinations where you can enjoy warm days after the UK summer has disappeared.
For the hottest short-haul options, Cyprus and the Canary Islands are excellent choices. If you want something a little more adventurous, Morocco and Egypt could be perfect. And if you prefer sightseeing, food and beautiful scenery rather than lying beside a pool, Madeira, Malta or the Algarve are worth considering.
So, while everyone else is digging out their winter coats, why not pack your sunglasses instead? Where would you love to escape to this autumn?
