How To Go To Memmingen For The Weekend On A Budget

Recently we did this trip and went to Memmingen for the weekend. But it didn’t quite go to plan! We were one of those planes caught in the storm and unable to land in Stansted on our return. So we ended up in Cologne for another 22 hours. But that was an extreme weather problem and it has never happened to me in all my years of travelling. I had never been to Memmingen before and didn’t know what to expect. But we watched a few Instagram Reels and TikToks of other people’s journeys.

Find Cheap Flights To Memmingen For The Weekend

Firstly You will need to find your cheap flights. This is easily done through Google Flights or Skyscanner. I use Skyscanner out of habit. It is easy to navigate the website and I like how it is all set out. You will type in your flight details from London To Memmingen (or your other starting airport). Then you will add the dates you want to go. The flights for Memmingen are great because we left London Stansted on a Saturday at 7 am and arrived in Memmingen by 9.40 am. The return flight was at 6 pm on Sunday. Meaning we were going to be home in plenty of time to get a good night’s sleep before school the following day.

Our flights cost £15 each way, but kids do not pay airport departure tax when they leave the UK, so it took Tilly’s ticket to Memmingen down to about £1. The flights totalled £46 with the discount.

When You Arrive In Memmingen

The airport is so small in Memmingen, and it takes a few minutes to get off the plane and walk through the exit. Outside are some buses that go further afield, like Munich. But there is also a local bus, that takes you to the train station (Memmingen Bahnhof). It costs 4 euros for an adult and 2 euros for a child. You need to use cash to get a ticket on the bus. They do not take credit or debit cards, but there is a ticket machine where you can get a ticket with a card.

The bus ride is about 10 minutes and it drops you at the train station which is perfect for your onward journey. It is also a great starting point if you decide to stay in Memmingen. Memmingen is easy to walk around and the old town is a few minutes walk from the station.

Travelling Further Afield When You Go To Memmingen For The Weekend

Memmingen is right in the southwestern part of Germany. It is just over an hour away from Austria and Switzerland. You can even get to Lichtenstein in a couple of hours. A lot of people fly to Memmingen as it is so cheap and then carry on to Austria to go skiing.

There are also some great places within Germany to visit. You are just over an hour away from Munich (Munchen). And you could also visit Ulm in just under an hour. Ulm is the home of the oldest church in Europe. You can also visit Lake Konstanz where you can get a boat to Switzerland, We did this in the summer and it was blissful.

We took a trip to Munich on a train ticket called a Bayern Ticket, it cost 29 Euro and up to five people can travel on it and children up to 14 travel free too. You can take unlimited journeys throughout the Bavaria area. You can also use this on trams, metro, buses as well as regional trains.

Where To Stay In Memmingen

There are plenty of places to stay on a budget and the accommodation prices are pretty good. Even if the accommodation isn’t close to town, it is still all within walking distance. There are also plenty of views to see along the way to where you are staying.

We stayed at Katrins AirBnB home and it cost me £46 for a night for myself and Tilly. The room was clean and had everything we needed for an overnight visit. It did have a shared bathroom, but it was clean and we stayed with other respectful people who also kept the shared area clean. You can also choose to stay in a hostel on a budget. Private rooms start at about £50 for 2 people. FMM Hostel is a stone’s throw away from the airport, so it’s perfect for early or late flights.

Things To Know When You Go To Memmingen For The Weekend

There is a free audio tour that is so easy to follow. We did this and it takes you to places that you might not think of seeing. It also gives you information of interest that you might not know about. The audio tour also takes you along the little canals in the town centre.

Nothing opens on a Sunday. We made the mistake of not buying things on Saturday and thinking we could go back the next day. Even supermarkets are closed on Sunday. But it meant that the city was empty and it made it a pleasant experience to explore, without getting in anyone’s way.

There are a few cafes and ice cream parlours in Memmingen, but again, not many are open on Sunday. We found a cafe in an old monastery, that was reasonably priced. The Kreuzhern Cafe is open every day and all year long.

There are a small number of lockers available at the train station. If you arrive early in the day, you can leave small luggage in the lockers for a few Euros.

The airport is tiny, there are only 8 gates there. So you do not need to get there too early. It is recommended to get there 90 minutes before your plane leaves.

Buses run every half hour to and from the airport, but on a Sunday, it is once an hour. You can choose to take a taxi but it will cost you 20 Euros and only saves you a few minutes compared to the bus. It is good value to get a taxi if there are 4 of you, or you have a lot of luggage.
