As winter arrives, parents often face the challenge of keeping their kids active and engaged outdoors. While it may be tempting to stay cosy indoors, the winter wonderland offers a myriad of opportunities for outdoor fun and physical activity. We wanted to share some exciting ways to keep kids active this winter, and full of winter spirit.

Embrace the winter, wrap up and go out to enjoy the time together. It is so easy to fall into a routine of watching TV or using devices in the winter. But going out to keep the kids active this winter will blow the cobwebs away.

Winter Scavenger Hunts

Create winter-themed scavenger hunts to spark excitement and exploration. List items like icicles, pinecones, or animal tracks, and let the kids embark on an outdoor adventure to discover these treasures. This activity combines physical activity with the thrill of discovery.

Get Sporty With Them

If they have a bike or a scooter, get them out in the winter. If you are walking to town, get them to take their scooter, they will burn more energy than if they just walk. Kids love scootering around and your child’s berg scooter will get lots of use on a walk. This is a great alternative to getting a bus home or driving for you both. If the weather is dry, go for a game of football or take a frisbee to the local park. You can even have a mini Olympics with them, turn it into a competition with a prize of a hot chocolate at the end. Family bike rides are a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon too, unless it is too wet and snowy.

Photography Adventures

Give kids a camera and encourage them to capture the beauty of winter. Whether photographing snow-covered landscapes or frosty tree branches, this activity combines outdoor exploration with the art of photography. You never know it could lead to a passion that lasts all year long.

Winter Nature Exploration

Turn outdoor outings into educational experiences. Identify winter birds, and examine frost patterns. Look in the mud for animal footprints and see if you can all identify them. This not only keeps kids active but also gives them an appreciation for the natural world. Visit a zoo or animal attraction to see how it compares with the summer. Teach the kids how animals adapt to the cold in the winter.

Snow Adventures

If it is snowing then there are loads of things you can do. From sledging adventures to snowman-building competitions. See who can make the tallest snowman, and who can build the most realistic snowman. Or even get them to make something else like a snowdog or snowcat. Show the kids how to make snow angels, because that is something magical for them to see.

Walks In The Woods

Go for a walk in the woods with the kids. You can talk about how much it has changed since the summer, and collect some leaves, conkers, fur cones and sticks to make something at home. If you find a log, maybe you can take it home with some holly to make a Christmas decoration. Here is a great free winter activity for you to do with the kids. Click the link below to print it.
