- 30g Soft Brown Sugar
How To Make Walnut Bread
Firstly you need to put the yeast in a bowl with 100ml of warm water and mush it up a bit with a fork. Then when it starts to bubble, you know it is working. This is where you add half of the white flour until it is all mixed together. Cover it with a bit of clingfilm or a tea towel and then leave it at room temperature for a couple of hours.
When the yeast is ready and ready to work into the flour. You need to grab a big bowl and put both flour and sugar into the bowl. In the centre, you need to make a well, and then you pop the yeast mixture and walnut oil into the centre. Add some warm water and stir it with a wooden spoon to make a soft and sticky dough. Add the water a bit at a time, you don’t want to make it too wet.
Flour the side that you will use to knead the dough. Place the dough on the side and knead it for 10 minutes. Knead it with the heels of your hands because this helps the gluten to start working Then fold the dough in half and knead it again. And repeat this until it is shiny and smooth – until it holds its shape too.
Put the dough into an oiled bowl and cover it again with a tea towel. Leave it for 90 minutes until it has doubled in size. This process is called ‘rising’. Then it needs kneading again for a few minutes to get rid of any bubbles that might be in the dough. Now it is time to add the walnuts as you knead the bread.
Shape the bread into a loaf shape (or rolls if you wish). If you use a bread tin, make sure you line it with some baking powder. Cover it again with the tea towel for 50 minutes.
Warm the oven up by turning it to the max for a few minutes. Cut the top of the bread, you can do it as a pattern or just score the top randomly. You need to do this to let the gas out when it cooks. Turn the oven to 180 degrees for a fan oven and 200 degrees on a normal oven setting. Bake the loaf until it is a dark golden brown colour. It should take 30 to 40 minutes. Now you tap the top of the load and it sounds hollow inside, then it is cooked and ready to eat. Leave it to cool on a wire rack.
If you make bread rolls, they cook faster and will need less cooking time. Check them after 10 minutes to see if they are ready. If they are take them out and leave them to cool. If they need a little longer, check them again every few minutes.
