Why You Need Exit, The Game Advent Calendar

Everyone loves an advent calendar. To me, they are the start of Christmas, and I enjoy counting down the days until Christmas. I always make sure to get myself an advent calendar but in recent years, I have moved away from the traditional chocolate advent calendar and more towards a fun advent calendar. This year I have got an escape room advent calendar. Exit, The Game Advent Calendar and can be found on Amazon for £44.99.

The Idea Of Exit, The Game Advent Calendar

Exit, The Game advent calendar puts you in the story as a pizza delivery person who delivers to a famous film studio. You find it deserted and there is a famous movie star missing. Every day you must solve an escape room-style riddle to move on to the next day. If you do it right, you will be able to solve the case after 24 days.

This advent calendar is designed to be only used once. Because some of the riddles need to be damaged so you can solve them. This didn’t matter to me as once I knew the answers to the riddles, it wouldn’t be fun a second time. However, the company do make a few varieties that have different riddles and follow different storylines. So next year I will excited to get another version of the advent calendar.

Exit, The Game advent calendar is beginner-level and suitable for ages 10 and above. However, it can be played as a team rather than individually. The puzzles take about 10 minutes a day to complete. so it would make a fun family activity or couples’ activity to do every day.

How Is It Different To Other Escape Games?

I have done similar home escape room-style activities in the past. But one of the things that I really like about this one in comparison to the others is that it doesn’t rely on any form of technology. Other brands that I have used rely on us to play a DVD or visit a website to complete a puzzle. However this one is completely paper-based. And the only thing you may need to supply is a pen to help solve some of the puzzles.

The advent calendar comes with a storybook that requires you to read a page a day. This helps to ensure the riddles and puzzles are part of a storyline and not individual puzzles. There is also a help book in case you become stuck on a particular riddle. Both books are clearly labelled and are designed in a way that you can’t accidentally see the answer to a future puzzle.

How To Use The Advent Calendar

Firstly, I was excited to open day one. You do have to prepare the decoder before you start. I was too excited and didn’t follow the instructions properly! Therefore when I went to use it it gave me a symbol combination that didn’t make sense. 

There are no numbers on the advent calender except number one. I started but reading the day one in the story book and it gave context to how the puzzle fits into the story. I open the door that said number one and found  a piece of card with 5 discs. From the story I know these were movie discs. I looked closely at these and found like doodles on the edges of some of them. I tried to put them next to each other to make sense of them but couldn’t understand what they meant. Then I tried to put them on top of each other and they lined up to produce images. These images then coincided with numbers on the discs. 

I then put the numbers into the decoders and found the code for the next days door. The decoder didn’t just give me the combination of symbols for the next door but also directions on how I would find that door based on the current door. For example it may have an arrow pointing down, an arrow pointing left and and an arrow pointing diagonally down. With this, you can follow the arrows and double check that it also leads to the door with the correct combination. 

I was excited when I solved the puzzle and I worked out what door was next. 

What I Liked About Exit, The Game Advent Calendar

Overall, I really like this advent calendar, and I think it is better than a chocolate advent calendar. I am really enjoying solving the puzzles and I hope to be able to solve the mystery in the end. And I would definitely recommend this as an alternative to the traditional advent calendar.

I loved that the puzzle wasnt too difficult. It did take me a few attempts to work out that they needed to be sacked on top of each other but that meant it wasn’t too easy either. I also enjoyed that the puzzle had a few parts. I had to work out what the images where then what numbers the images meant and then turned the numbers into symbols. this meant that had I needed to use the clues, there would still be parts left to do and therefore I would still get the sense of achievement.
