Kids always hit a difficult time between the age of 11 and 13. They are not quite a child, not quite a teen and then not anywhere close to being an adult. It is hard for then to let go of the toys and things they did as a younger child. Yet they are not old enough to be involved in adult conversations and making plans with adults. It is the same with their bedroom, their quiet place, their sanctuary. There gets to a point where, they will want a teen bedroom they will love and look after. They are also going through some rough times with their hormones, so they are often upset and need cheering up.
When they are ready to take the giant step of a room makeover into a teen room they will love, just go with it. They will have so many ideas of what they want to do with their space. But it could also break the bank! Keeping them grounded on some details of their teen bedroom, means there is more money to spend elsewhere on luxury products.
How To Save Money When You Do A Teen Bedroom
One of my favourite ways to save money when I decorate a room is to paint it. Then I paint three walls, and wallpaper one wall of the room. This is a feature wall and if the room is small you will only need a couple of rolls to decorate a feature wall. With a feature wall, you can go for bold and big designs that grab your focus. The painted walls are good for then to hang pictures and stick photos. Try not to go for fashionable decor, because they will want it changed in a few weeks when it is out of fashion. And they will want something else instead.
If they are changing from a high sleeper to a more teen-friendly bed, there is a great hack you can do. Tilly has a wooden high sleeper. We are going to saw the legs off and make it into a regular bed that they will still grow with. You will lose the space underneath but without the toys and clutter, this will not be a problem for them. This approach not only saves money but also promotes sustainability by repurposing furniture and reducing waste. A high sleeper bed with a desk can serve as a versatile investment, adapting to your child’s changing preferences and needs. Bedding can be recycled from bedding that you have at home. But it is always nice to have your own new bedding when you get a new bedroom.
Look around on Marketplace or eBay for furniture that you can decorate with your own design. Ask family members if they have any furniture going spare that you can repurpose to decorate the teen bedroom they will love.
Special Things To Add To A Teen Bedroom
Your teens room is going to be empty after they have got rid of all of the old toys and kids things. Encourage them to keep the special things that bring memories and place them in the attic. A memory chest is such a precious thing to have and share when they have their own kids.
Your teen might like to use their room as a chillout space. Somewhere for them to spend time with their friends. Make it their happy place. Now is the right time to add a tv to their bedroom, they are old enough to appreciate it and it will help them to relax after heavy days at school. It also means they don’t hog the tv downstairs. Frame tvs work well in a teen bedroom because they blend in to the decor and give a more harmonious look to the room. When the tv is not being used, they can use it as a piece of art in their bedroom. Nearly half of the UK’s children fall asleep whilst watching the tv, because they are so relaxed.
Candles, picture frames and fake flowers or plants are always a hit with teens. But don’t go overboard with them. A single aromatic candle or some wax melts is a nice touch and can help them relax. Obviously only let them have a candle if they are old enough to know how to use one safely. Get some fairy lights. The best time to buy them is after Christmas, when you will get them really cheaply.
Teens struggle with their confidence, so inspirational quotes in a teen room is a good call. You can easily make some yourself by printing them off at home and popping them in a frame. If your handwriting is beautiful, you can write it yourself and then frame it. If you have a Circuit then you can make some really awesome inspirational things for your teen bedroom.
Let Your Teen Be Themself
Your teen is only just finding out who they are. They will change their circle of friends many times in the first couple of years at secondary school. So when you create a teen bedroom like this for them it helps to find a happy space. Let them be creative when you decorate their room, their creativity shows their personality.
