Prepping for Baby – Things to Think About
Congratulations on your pregnancy! We hope that it is all ticking along nicely. You have probably already started to get things ready for the arrival of your little one. Just in case you want a bit of guidance we have this (hopefully) helpful blog for you to peruse. Check out our guide to help prepare for a new baby.
The House
Probably one of the bigger initial investments is preparing your house (and your car, which we count as part of the property in this section). There are lots of things to gather and lots of flat-pack to assemble. It can be quite a process. Let’s start with some of the more obvious things to help prepare for a new baby in your life.
Decorate A Bedroom To Prepare For A New Baby
Even if you are keeping your baby with you at night initially, bubba will grow fast and need a bedroom quicker than you think. This baby room will of course need to be furnished with a bed and a changing table and drawers and decorations and the list can go on and on.
Our first tip is to never be afraid to get creative. Buy things second-hand, upscale existing furniture, use what you already have and sometimes the cheaper thing is exactly what you need. A changing table can simply be a table that you only use for the baby. As long as it is safe and stable you can use a second-hand crib for your little one. That chest of draws you’ve had for years could be just the thing to hold all those baby clothes. Things can get expensive fast so if you can save a few pounds here and there for something else, go right ahead. Preparing your house can be expensive, so try to keep costs down.

Baby proofing To Prepare For A New Baby
It is never too early to get your baby proof on. Take each room and check as much as you can, even get down on the floor for a baby-eye view to understand the hazards they may encounter. You don’t need to go crazy and round off all pointy corners or re-carpet everything but you can start to see the potential dangers. Moving and securing things sooner rather than later could save you some grief.
The Birth Plan
This one is more of a choice but if you want a birth plan here are a few ideas of what you could include…
- People’s contact info – You will of course have your birth partner and maybe some close friends and family with you on the big day, however, if for some reason someone important cannot be there, have them noted down somewhere. That way your birth partner and family can reach out to the missing people, your doctor, your emergency contact or whoever in just moments without having to ask you. (Of course, get the permission of these individuals first)
- Medical Info – If you have any allergies, especially any to medicine, have that noted down for easy access. You will also want to have written somewhere what your preference for pain relief is.
- After birth – Do you want to keep your placenta? Are you privately storing or publicly donating the cord blood and tissue? Get that and any paperwork that your need into your birth plan for safekeeping. US readers can find out about cord blood banking here.
- Equipment and Environment – Birth pool, yoga mat, music or not, lighting, the volume of the room etc – anything that you have requested and had approved, note it down so that you or your birth partner will remember them.
This document is yours to create so make it your own.
Watching Family and Friends Prepare For A New Baby
Your nearest and dearest are probably just as excited as you are about the new little one. However, you may want to set up some proper boundaries before your baby is here. Obviously, let them be excited but gently tell them if you are going to take a week or two before accepting visitors, how much they can handle the baby or any rules you might have. On the flip side if you might need help you could ask around for those who would be available.

You
Amongst everything else, the most important step in your preparations is prepping yourself. Your preparations can be anything from…
– Daily yoga to keep you focused.
– Meal prep of freezer meals to ensure after the baby has arrived you can look after yourself.
– Endless lists and to-do lists to keep your home exactly as you want it.
– Creative outlets to clear your head.
Whatever you need to do, do it! There is nothing worse than feeling out of your depth so ensuring you are ready to greet your little one is probably the most important thing on this list.
Best of luck with everything!
